PPTA members should communicate with
employees the need to be prepared for a possible influenza pandemic.
Companies should consider a plan that addresses the individual
company’s specific needs and how to maintain operations during an
influenza pandemic. Potential exists for additional outbreaks to
occur several months after the first outbreak, which will require a
long-term preparedness plan. An influenza pandemic is expected to
affect multiple areas concurrently. Therefore, plans should not
include the ability to shift-resources from one region to another.
PPTA members could explore the possibility of adopting modified
existing emergency plans such as snow emergency, hurricane,
terrorism, etc. Plans need to address business continuity with
particular emphasis on employee absenteeism, maintaining a qualified
donor population, access to out-sourced information such as lab
results, and the ability to maintain distribution channels. The
following are resources that may be useful in developing an
individual company-specific preparedness plan.
